World Travel - Analogue

These represent a few of my favorite images from the pre-digital era.
They were mostly shot on Fuji Velvia 50 or Kodachrome 64 using a Minolta Maxxum.
This was before HDR or multiple exposures, and when you had to pay every time you pressed the trigger. The graininess is inherent to the film process.

Right Place Right Time - Puerto Vallarta Malecon Seahorse Statue
As I was strolling along the Malecon in Puerto Vallarta on an otherwise cloudy evening in 1995, the sun broke through a hole in the clouds just as it was setting. I hurriedly set up my tripod and used my flash to compensate for the heavily backlit statue. As it was the pre-digital era, it would be a few weeks before I knew if my efforts were successful.

Unaware
I always loved this photo - maybe because it is different than many of my other photos which tend to be landscapes; somehow it reminds me of leafing through all those National Geographic magazines as a child. This was a Hilltop tribe village in Thailand near Chiang Mai, where the residents wore the clothes and continued the customs and language from their original homes - some from Tibet, some China, others from Nepal and Burma. A stone's throw away was a different tribe with different attire, language and religion.
Champagne Pool
Geothermal pools and geysers abound near Rotorua, the Yellowstone of New Zealand. The Champagne Pool is in the Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, a paid attraction well worth a visit. It gets its name from effervescence due to the bubbling CO2 gas being released.
After the Fire
Taken the evening after the 2003 firestorm that destroyed over 200 homes in my hometown of Kelowna, BC. An ironically peaceful scene, this picture is one of the last "analogue" photos that I ever took. What can't be seen is the three foot strip of charcoal washed up on the shoreline from all the burnt trees.
